Frontmania ’23 – Emiel Kwakkel – Holistic Approach to Sustainable IT

What can I do to make a green impact at work? This question was the starting point of presentations last year on the choices you make at work as a developer, tester, quality engineer, product owner, you name it. Those choices sometimes are for the greener good, and sometimes sadly account for an increase in carbon pollution. In this presentation we take a step back. How can we go from isolated initiatives from intrinsically motivated colleagues towards absolutely lowering emissions with a more holistic approach? In this talk, you’ll discover the power of embracing scarcity as a catalyst for sustainable action and we will emphasize the importance of avoiding the pitfalls of isolated green initiatives that merely shift the problem elsewhere. By integrating sustainability principles into the entire lifecycle of IT products and services, we can effectively address environmental challenges. We’ll cover some mindshifts that will help you in the process and that accommodate the underlying sustainability principles.
